Jenny Chang of A Bird in the Hand Art

Filed under: Uncategorized — by lil @ 5:03 pm

It’s an “addiction,” Jenny Chang of A Bird in the Hand Art explained. Turning one’s art into a business can surely have its drawbacks, but Chang seems to be making a masterpiece of it.

“Seriously, I would be making this stuff anyway. The business side of it does take time, but it’s fun to think that someone would pay me to do something I love,” she said.

Chang’s specialties include a colorful mix of jewelry, stylish accessories, figurines, and house wares.

Marrying fabric, wood, ribbon, and paint in different adorable variations, her jewelry collection is possibly her greatest feat. A Bird in the Hand Art stands apart from a mass of chain-ridden, heavy-metal necklaces and bracelets with their unique and vibrant aesthetic.

Chang exclaimed, “I love color! I have a very eclectic style. It’s not unusual for me to find something and say, ‘This is so weird. I have to have it!’”

Where can you find inspiration akin to that Chang finds before she crafts up one of her splendid little treasures? She revealed, “I actually get really inspired after walking around a thrift store. Not only do I find things to cut up or repurpose, but also I might find something else really wonderful as is that inspires me.”

Talk about taking the plunge! This couple got married on the rapids!

“We met as whitewater kayak instructors, teaching together during Spring clinics in 2003. We were married the following year. We wanted to incorporate our love for the water and the outdoors into our wedding, and considered several options. DuPont State Forest was our final choice.”

100 Mile Registry

Local gift-picking site offers Seattle-blown glassware, not big-box goblets

Getting married? You can request these locally made rice bowls by Heidi’s Pottery on the Sound Trading Co. registry site.

Local dinner menu served right off the land? Check. Fresh flowers straight from the farm? Yep. Locally built suit, locally made gown… You two are all over the 100 mile wedding. Make sure your friends and family can participate too by registering at Sound Trading Company.

Lilah Steece, a Seattleite with a background in development and event planning for non-profits, co-founded the company when she realized that there were no options for a gift registry that benefited the environment and the community. Putting to work her ability to bring folks together and procure goods and services from local artisans, she created one. (Sound Trading also offers baby and general gift registration.) She still hasn’t heard of anything else like her site, so if the Seattle model takes off, perhaps Steece will, as they say, spread the love.

Though you can’t sign up for blenders or bath towels at Sound Trading, there are some nice options for dinner and serving ware made right around the corner, not to mention eco-travel packages and some smart local services. My favorite: Tiny’s Organic CSA box. Perfect gift for the couple who has everything, including a dedication to sustainable living.

Obviously, Sound Trading is an add-on, alternative registry. Do your department, home, and tabletop stores to cover your bases and ensure that Aunt Ida doesn’t freak out over how weird and alterna you’ve become, but then consider others like this one, as well as charity organizations and outdoor marts. Chances are good that your guests will appreciate the options, and anyway, it’s the modern, and very Northwest, thing to do.

“Think Global, Act Local” – Does it work? And more questions from Earth Day’s birthplace.

Filed under: Uncategorized — by lil @ 2:48 am

This interview comes from the Huffington Post.  An interview by Mike Ragogna of Sigrid Wright, Assistant Director at the Community Environmental Council, the organization in Santa Barbara that helped to bring about the very first Earth Day 40 years ago.

“MR: Think Globally, Act Locally”… But can we really make enough of a difference by taking action on a local level?

SW: Following the climate talks in Copenhagen in December 2009, international leaders noted that more than half of the actions needed to address global warming will be led not by national or international policies, but through local initiatives and leadership. If we don’t act now, then who will and when? With the aid of information technology and the web, successful local actions in Santa Barbara can inspire change in any part of the world and vice versa. A thousand sustainable points of light across the globe will change the world.

MR: So what can individuals or communities do to affect change?

SW: We are big proponents of measurement. Flex Your Power offers a do-it-yourself home energy audit to help you prioritize energy efficiency upgrades. The U.S. EPA also has a simple carbon footprint calculator that will help you estimate your family’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Once you know where you are at, we like everyone to set big goals and then do their best to achieve them. No one person has the same needs, lifestyle, or budget, so it’s silly to say there is “one” thing to do. Some people will take energy conservation to heart and turn off lights, adjust thermostats, and bike to work. Others will purchase a fuel-efficient car, or invest in solar water heating or electricity. Still others might write to their local, state, and federal elected officials urging them to end our reliance on fossil fuels. All of these actions are important and we cannot succeed without each individual doing their part and communities taking the lead. “

Give the gift of a comprehensive home energy assessment from Green Homes of Washington, LLC or add one to your wedding registry.  Visit: www.soundtradingco.com
